Roles for parents and others?

iStock_000007069874_ExtraSmallParents are often anxious to provide support for a student with a complaint and may wish to offer professionally qualified representation.

Institutions should not accept complaints from parents on behalf of students over the age of 18, and normally not on behalf of younger students without the student’s knowledge and consent.

  • The student must make any complaint himself or herself or make it clear in writing that he or she is asking someone to do so for him or her, or joining in a ‘group complaint’ with full consent.
  • The student may in consultation with the institution ask to bring a parent or other supporter to a meeting or hearing.
